WHAT WE DO + HOW WE DO IT
Beacon's Closet is a clothing exchange store. We selectively buy, sell, and trade used clothing and accessories, from, to, and with the public, on a walk-in basis. Beacon's Closet specializes in both ultramodern and vintage attire. What we will buy is dictated by the following factors: season, demand, condition, and inventory levels.
how to sell your stuff
We continue to buy daily, without appointments, during all hours of operation up until a half an hour before closing. during peak selling seasons, however, cut off times may be earlier, particularly at the park slope location. please feel free to give us a call to find out about projected wait times. we will evaluate the items while you wait, or you may drop them off for your convenience. any items that we pass on can be left in the store and will be donated to charity. we will require your GOVERNMENT ISSUED photo i.d. when you are selling items. sorry, no exceptions. this is for tax and documentation purposes only. your information will not be shared with other companies or used for any kind of promotion.
charities
Due to the volume of clothing that we receive, we are always looking for new charities, with not-for-profit documentation, that are able to pick up from us on a regular basis. If you are
affiliated with such an organization, please contact us at service@beaconscloset.com. currently, our donations are picked up by the following organization(s):
dominick's mobile ministry – a not-for-profit mobile service established in 1995, which distributes customer clothing to the needy, homeless, and to churches throughout new york and pennsylvania. items are both given away directly to individuals, and sometimes sold with a request for donations, to pay for this not-for-profit's operational expenses. this clothing is distributed through churches and through the mobile unit. any proceeds which this charity collects go toward fulfilling the mission of its own organization... director, joseph dominick.
financial contributions
we regularly donate a portion of our profits to the following charities: b.a.r.c. (brooklyn animal resource coalition, a no kill animal shelter based in williamsburg), unicef, doctors without borders, coalition for the homeless, poplar springs animal sanctuary (a 400 acre non-profit refuge for farm animals and wildlife located in maryland), and habitat for humanity.

We offer exactly 35% cash, or 55% store credit, of the very price tag that we put on your items. Since this is not a consignment shop, you will receive your cash or credit voucher on the spot. We will evaluate the items while you wait, or you may drop them off for your convenience.

HISTORY
The first store, in Williamsburg, opened in 1997. At only 900 square feet, it was a humble little thing. Due to heavy demand, however, the store quickly transformed into a fashion destination, and as such, needed more space. Carrie Peterson, the store's founder, needed a solid partner. Sam Fogarino, the store's first employee, initially filled that role. After Sam moved on to a full-fledged music career, Cindy Wheeler, who came to the Beacon as a manager in 1999, took the reins. Still owned and operated by Carrie and Cindy, the store made its big move in November of 2002, and now enjoys the luxury of inhabiting a 5500 square foot clothing paradise.
The Park Slope store opened the day after Christmas in 2002. This shop, opened by Carrie's long-time friends Cindy H. and her husband Adrian, maintains a cozy and personal atmosphere, much like the original location in Williamsburg. This new branch has been very warmly received in this lovely part of Brooklyn, and is constantly inundated with fresh hot stock from neighborhood fashionistas.
We have received an array of local and international press including features in Vanity Fair, Time Out NY, Jane, Lucky, and Japan's Epica, and EF magazines. We have also received "Best Of" awards from the two most popular local weekly newspapers based in New York, The Village Voice, and The NY Press.
Most importantly, however, our customers keep coming back, and enthusiastically proclaim, "You have the best stuff." We thank you for that.
