beacon's blog

the new new york
by Amanda, October 07, 2011 | permalink

last saturday, october 1st, beacon's closet took part in GreenHomeNYC's block party in front of our store in williamsburg.

one core component of the event was to use the streetscape and surroundings as a "classroom," transforming the block into an example of a greener city.

all proceeds made at our pop-up shop were donated to city growers, a one-acre rooftop farm here in new york city.

we learned how to paint a green roof, watched worms wiggle and transform organic matter into dirt, and hung out in the student-designed sustainable furniture lounge.

thanks GreenHomeNYC! we'll see you next year!
